How can I get involved with Citizen Corps?

When was Citizen Corps created?

Following the tragic events that occurred on September 11, 2001, state and local government officials have increased opportunities for citizens to become an integral part of protecting the homeland and supporting the local first responders. Officials agree that the formula for ensuring a more secure and safer homeland consists of preparedness, training, and citizen involvement in supporting first responders. In January 2002, President George W. Bush launched USA Freedom Corps, to capture the spirit of service that has emerged throughout our communities following the terrorist attacks.

On December 10, 2003 Governor Bob Riley established the Alabama Citizen Corps Council via Executive Order for the purpose of bringing together state and local leaders to strengthen communities and prepare individuals to respond to the threats of terrorism, crime and disasters. In addition to the state council, Alabama currently has numerous local councils which serve over 67 % of the states population.

What are the different Citizen Corps Programs?

Where does Citizen Corps receive funding?

"I believe one of the most effective ways government can help those in need is to help charities, faith-based organizations and community groups that are working every day to transform lives with acts of compassion. Government must stand with them and be on their side as they reach out to hurting neighbors in desperate need of our help.”
