Emily Sarvis - YWCA of Central Alabama.
Why did you join AmeriCorps?
“I joined Americorps to formally commit myself to serving my community. I was already frequently volunteering, and AmeriCorps’ benefits offered the exact experience I was seeking.”
What is your favorite part of national service?
“My favorite part about my service is building relationships with an immensely diverse group of people–specifically the mentoring relationships I have with my students.”
What is your favorite thing to do when your not serving?
“Drawing and reading comics is by far my favorite hobby. I also enjoy throwing dinner parties for my friends; I make the best fried green tomatoes you’ll ever eat.”
What is your favorite snack?
“My favorite snacks are satsumas and muscadines. I also love a soft, creamy cheese with some wheat crackers.”
What is your favorite soda?
“No soda for me please, but I do make my own kombucha–which is just as fizzy, and even more delicious.”
What are your plans after AmeriCorps?
“After my year of service at Woodlawn Foundation I plan to spend at least a month traveling in the states. After which, I’d like to return to the Woodlawn neighborhood, and continue teaching with Desert Island Supply Company.”
