Megan Nunnery -Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging
What did you join AmeriCorps?
"Volunteerism is a crucial aspect to why I wanted to pursue a career in Social Work, I see this as the real world training ground to better understand and serve future clients."
What is your favorite part of national service?
"You meet so many diverse people through National Service that teach you knew ideas and understandings of the community and beyond. It’s about being creative with the resources that we have been given to better promote well- being in a targeted population."
What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not serving?
"I love being around people, so that means doing things with friends or planning events. My group of friends have an obsession with throwing ‘Gal’ themed parties, this can include “Galsgiving” and “Galentines Day”. Recently, I’ve become interested in going to coffee house type concerts thrown in everyday people’s homes. A few bands and artists in Birmingham and Florence have created a co-op and they will throw an intimate concert in people’s yards or living rooms and you can get invited through word of mouth. They usually charge a small cover fee, but it is a lot of fun and you meet some unique people. I also like napping."
What is your favorite snack?
"It is ever-changing, I get weird cravings for very specific things like carrots and apples and I will only eat those things until dinner time. If I’m being especially unhealthy I’ll get a pint of coffee flavored gelato, but I try not to. "
What is your favorite soda?
"Dr. Pepper."
What are your plans after AmeriCorps?
"I plan on going to graduate school to pursue my MSW degree. Some schools I am considering are Samford and UAB. If I had the money for out-of-state tuition I would like to go to The University of Southern Mississippi. My plan is to concentrate in Macro Social Work, and I see myself working with communities to promote well-being and policy change."
