Elizabeth Jackson - Birmingham Engaging in STEM
Why did you join AmeriCorps?
"When I first applied to the program it was my hope to help the children I would meet fall in love with reading, as I did at an early age. At that time I didn’t know that the focus of the program had changed to STEM. Science is my passion, but to get through it you need a strong foundation in math. I want to help the children I tutor learn to enjoy math so that later they can find even greater enjoyment in science. The mission of BETA is one that I strongly believe and look forward to watching the future success."
What is your favorite part of national service?
"I really enjoy seeing the children’s eyes light up when they finally understand a concept and seeing the confidence they exude when they are able to correctly work a problem on their own. I love seeing the look of relief and relaxing on people’s faces when I am able to do something for them or help them with something they were having a difficult time with."
What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not serving?
"I love to eat, read, listen to music, and watch Korean dramas."
What is your favorite snack?
"My favorite snake is dried pineapple and iced oatmeal cookies."
What is your favorite soda?
"My favorite soda is Mango flavored Jarritos soda."
What are your plans after AmeriCorps?
"After completing my AmeriCorps service I plan to teach English in South Korea for 1+ years. Upon my return I will go to graduate school to obtain a Master’s in Forensic Chemistry."
