Member Spotlight: Keyona Dunham
Meet Keyona Dunham, she serves with Birmingham Engaging in STEM AmeriCorps-BETA.
What motivated you to join AmeriCorps? I was motivated to join because I will get the opportunity to motivate kids and help them to strive for great things, as well as, gain experience in the field of teaching.
What would you like to get out of this service opportunity? I would like to receive more knowledge on teaching and education, but also on working with kids as well. I want to have the experience to know what I'm getting myself into when I become a teacher after my years at CNN. I want to write books for kids and being in AmeriCorps working with kids will help me do exactly that.
What will your service focus on for the 2017-18 program year? My service will focus on helping the students’ excel in all subjects but mostly math. I will also focus on bettering my community as well as others. It will focus on helping me with school and excelling in the workforce.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps? My plan after AmeriCorps is to go to Clark University or Stanford University for four to eight years. Major in journalism and communications with a minor in political science and government. To earn an internship at CNN for a year and continue to work there for the next fifteen to twenty years. Then possibility venture into government and politics.
*Keyona Dunham is currently fulfilling her AmeriCorps service at Carrie A. Tuggle Elementary School.
