Member Spotlight: Shakierah Blackmon, Program Specialist

Meet Shakierah Blackmon, she serves with the Building Communities, Bettering Lives AmeriCorps program at the YWCA in the Healthy Relationships program.

What motivated you to join AmeriCorps? What motivated me to join AmeriCorps was my desire to make a difference in my community.

What would you like to get out of this service opportunity? During this year of service, I hope to gain more knowledge about the prevalence and effect that dating violence has on adolescents. I also want to learn about other community outreach programs that cater to educating and preventing dating violence.

What will your service focus on for the 2017-18 program year? My service will focus on educating adolescents within the Jefferson, Blount, and St. Clair county area about teen dating violence and how to prevent dating violence.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps? My plans are to obtain my LGSW (licensed graduate social worker). I want to work with children and families either in a medical or social setting.
