Member Spotlight: Sally LaRue, Outreach Coordinator
Meet Sally LaRue, she serves with the Building Communities, Bettering Lives AmeriCorps program with the Freshwater Land Trust.
What motivated you to join AmeriCorps? This is my second year serving with AmeriCorps, so I knew the incredible benefits that can be gained while serving, especially in the professional realm. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer before applying for a second year of AmeriCorps service, and I was motivated by the opportunities AmeriCorps would provide for me to reconnect with my community. I value living a life of service and AmeriCorps is able to facilitate that type of lifestyle.
What would you like to get out of this service opportunity? During this service opportunity, I would like to explore different areas of interest I’ve always had but been unable to pursue. I am passionate about our natural world, so I am grateful for the chance to learn more about conserving land and water for a brighter future. I would also like to learn more about how my community operates in general, and I’d like to foster strong professional and personal connections with people.
What will your service focus on for the 2017-18 program year? During this program, my service will center around the values of my service site: conserving land and water and creating dynamic green spaces. My position is about spreading the word about what we do and creating connections with community partners who value our work. I hope to implement a functional volunteer program and internship program to build the capacity of our organization even further.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps? Currently, I’m working towards my master’s degree in creative writing which I should receive around the same time my AmeriCorps service concludes. I hope to pursue work in this field, or, if I fall in love with the world of environmental nonprofits, which is entirely possible, I might look to do something related to that.
Thank you for your service Sally!
