Member Spotlight: Andrea Miller, Program Specialist
Meet Andrea Miller. Andrea serves with the Building Communities, Bettering Lives AmeriCorps program with Alaquest Collaborative for Education.
What motivated you to join AmeriCorps? I volunteered with Alaquest the previous 2 years. The opportunity to serve with AmeriCorps arose and I was immediately motivated to serve for an organization that I believed in and knew I could help succeed.
What would you like to get out of this service opportunity? Going into this service year, I expected to gain the knowledge and skills to better myself and my future. Now I am expecting to gain the life experience that comes with serving with a non-profit, specifically the emotional and educational experience that I will receive from serving members of my community.
What will your service focus on for the 2017-18 program year? With my AmeriCorps co-member, my service will focus on recruiting volunteers and implementing the Life Skills Education Program in 4 Jefferson County schools: McAdory Middle School and 3 Fairfield Elementary schools. I will be training the volunteers in Social-Emotional Learning and also train them in classroom behavioral management. They will educate the students in life skills such as decision-making, self-awareness, goal-setting, relationship-building, and confidence building.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps? My plans are tentative as of right now. I would love to keep serving under AmeriCorps with Alaquest and attend graduate school. I would also love to move out of state and pursue a job with NPR.
Thank you for your service Andrea!
