Member Spotlight: Aimee Gueret, Teach for America Alabama AmeriCorps Program

Meet Aimee Gueret, a 4th-Grade Teacher in Avondale Elementary School, a service site of the Teach for America Alabama AmeriCorps program.

1. What motivated you to join AmeriCorps? I was motivated to join Teach For America because I got to see a small glimpse of the impact teachers have on students. I facilitated part-time at my high school and got addicted to seeing the joy I brought to the girls every day. I wanted to bring this joy to all students, but I understood how so many children in my home state didn't receive the same opportunities as I did. I felt like joining Teach For America was the next step for me in a long journey of bringing equitable education to students in Alabama.  2. What would you like to get out of this service opportunity?

I hope my students gain a deeper respect for one another.   3. What will your service focus on for the 2021-2022 program year?

During this program year, my service will focus on instilling a love of learning in my students. I hope I can encourage them to read outside of class and elevate their reading levels. Also, I want to encourage a high participation rate in our math and science courses. Once schools return to the classroom, I hope to incorporate hands-on (socially distant) activities to help them understand math and science concepts.

4. What are your plans after AmeriCorps?

I hope to stay in the classroom and help more students attain excellent educations!

Thank you for your service Aimee!
