Member Spotlight: Terrance Cooke, Teach for America Alabama AmeriCorps Program

Meet Terrance Cooke, TFA Member currently serving with Hayes K-8, located in the northern section of Birmingham, Alabama (Jefferson County). A service site of the Teach for America Alabama AmeriCorps program.

Teach For America finds, develops, and supports equity-oriented leaders to transform education and expand opportunity for all children.

What inspired you to serve as a Teach for America/AmeriCorps member? I was inspired to serve as a Teach for America/AmeriCorps member by my passion for education equity and desire to make a positive impact in underserved communities. I believe that every child deserves access to a quality education, and I wanted to be part of the solution to address educational inequities.

What are your plans after Teach for America/AmeriCorps? After AmeriCorps, I plan to keep working at Hayes Middle School and finish my master's degree. With my education and work experience, I want to work in education policy or advocacy, focused on making changes to the system that will help all kids do better in school. A more fair and just society is what I want to achieve in the long run through education change.

Member Terrance Cooke took his students on a field trip to the Alabama State Capitol in February 2024 to meet Governor Ivey and hear about the importance of early education and her three 'Cs for Success': character, competence, and commitment. His students were so excited for the visit.

Terrance, thank you for your service!
